On the second day we woke up relatively early
and headed to Trafalgar Square. We walked around the square and took some
pictures then looked for a place where I could get a "Full English Fry" for
breakfast. The Full English Fry is also known as a heart attack on a plate
and comes with eggs, bacon, sausage, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, fried
potatoes, and toast. We found a coffee shop near Trafalgar Square and I
had one there. It was great. I planned on being full the rest of the
day. Next we went on a boat tour of the Thames River. The Thames is
the river that shoots right through the heart of London. I wanted to get a
drink while I was on the boat, but everything they had was room temperature.
After the boat ride, we headed for the Tower Bridge. This is a giant
hydraulic powered drawbridge with a tower on each side and a platform connecting
the two towers at the top. We went to the top of the towers, walked
across, checked out the views, and watched a couple of short films on the making
of the bridge. Then we checked out the gears and stuff that make the tower
run and then we walked across to the Tower of London. This is the famous
tower where lots of torture and other fun stuff took place. We checked out
the torture chamber, and I spent a lot of time reading the exhibits on the
history of torture in the tower. Then we checked out the courtyard and one
of the inner towers. We saw lots of old suits of armor and weapons and
then we found one of the guards with the red suits and the big fury hats
standing outside the place that held the royal jewels. No matter what I
said to the guy he wouldn't flinch. After watching him for a few minutes
he suddenly started going crazy and then another guard came out to take his
place. This was the well known "changing of the guard". After this
we headed over to the Tate Modern museum. Believe it or not I was actually
hungry by this point. The busy day must have burned off that Full Fry.
So we went to the museum cafe and I had an organic cider and a sandwich with
duck eggs and mustard. Yum. The museum was great, filled with lots
of modern art. For dinner, our plan was to try some Indian food. I
had actually never had real Indian food before this. But since the British
took over India, lots of Indians came back to London, so their Indian food was
supposed to be really good. We ordered a few curry dishes and a bottle of
wine and it was great. After this, we walked back to the hotel and had
some cider at the hotel pub. By British law, all bars have to stop serving
alcohol at 11PM. How archaic. |
