First thing we did on Saturday was
go to Madame Tussaud's wax museum. It was supposed to be really good from
everything I've heard and read, but I thought it was kind of boring. I did
have an interesting little custard thing in the cafe for breakfast though.
Then we had to go through this labyrinth to find our way into the planetarium
that's part of the museum. We finally found it and that was unimpressive
also. After the wax museum we headed over to the outdoor flea market that
happens every Saturday on Portobello Road. I had some cider at a couple of
pubs (Scrumpy Jack was really good) and I had some supposedly authentic Mexican
food. But how authentic can you really be across the sea? It was OK.
After the market we took the metro over to the Salvador Dali museum. We
thought it was closing at 5:00, but it turns out it was open until 8:00 on
Saturdays. It was great! We stayed until closing. The whole
floor was dedicated to Salvador Dali and I read the descriptions for almost
every painting and sculpture. The basement had a whole other section
dedicated to Picasso. I had to rush through that one since it was almost
closed. After the museum we looked for a place to eat dinner. The
place we wanted to go from the guide book was closed so we went to this sort of
British diner. They had two-fers for meals so I had a Shepherd's Pie and
Fish and Chips. The Fish and Chips weren't as good as the Rock and Sole
Plaice, but they were decent and the Shepherd's Pie was not bad. After
that we went to the Tower Records in Piccadilly Circus, and I checked out a book on Salvador Dali and
a few magazines. Finally I had a chance to do some gambling at the hard
rock. They had 4 deck blackjack, something we don't see in the states.
There was this crazy guy placing huge bets on my hands and he was winning like
crazy. I wound up 13 pounds ahead which was about $25. Can't
complain.
